Istanbul; City of Many Faiths
Istanbul On My Mind
Published at : 21 Dec 2020
Different faiths coexisting in Istanbul. It is Aug 30, 2014. A hot and extremely humid August Sunday in Istanbul, Turkey. This is inside a small Orthodox church where two large air conditioners are not able to keep the main hall cool. Therefore, the windows are opened to provide a slight breeze. It is the baptism ceremony for a little girl whose father is Turkish and the mother is of Romanian descent. While the priest is reciting the customary prayers for the baptism, a muezzin at the nearby mosque is calling the faithful Muslims to prayer. May both prayers help the little girl to have a long, happy and healthy life. This is perhaps a scene one can only witness in Istanbul. Well, may be also in Jerusalem.
