Dozens of anti-lockdown and anti-vaccine demonstrators gathered at Grand Army Plaza in New York City's Brooklyn at the so-called 'Rally For Freedom' on Sunday to protest against strict anti-coronavirus measures. A group of Antifa counter-protesters disrupted the event, with scuffles breaking out between two groups.
"It was supposed to be 15 days to stop the spread, and it turned to almost a year now," said one of the anti-lockdown protesters, adding that, "the lockdowns didn't work before and the only thing they are accomplishing is destroying the city, destroying the economy, destroying people's mental and financial health. Enough is enough."
In November, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced increased restrictions for several areas as hospitals were facing capacity issues.
The state of New York has registered more than 696 thousand COVID-19 infections and 34,900 related deaths since the beginning of the pandemic, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
