If you’re lucky, you get to meet the love of your life.
Some people matter because we grow attached to them. Because we spend years getting to know them, seeing them at their strongest and their weakest, understanding the entirety of what makes them up.
Others matter because they rip us open. Because their energy combined with ours creates an electric reaction that cannot be reversed. Because their worldview changes ours for the better. Because in a single instant, they can somehow matter more to us than people we have known our whole lives.
The loves of our lives do not follow the ordinary rules. They are capable of loving us more in a single year than others could love us in fifty. They can teach us more in a day than others have taught us over the entire course of our lifetime.
And we might not always get that lifetime with them.
Sometimes your soulmate doesn’t get to be the person you grow old with – the one who stands in front of you on your wedding day and promises to stand by you in sickness and in health.
Sometimes your soulmate wants a big country home filled with children and you want a thriving career in the city. Sometimes your soulmate craves adventure and challenge while you need stability and stillness. Sometimes you outlive your soulmate. Sometimes one of your love outlives the other’s.
Even the greatest, most all-encompassing romances can hold people back from the lives that they’re meant to be living. And maybe the most loving thing those people can do is to let each other go.
And so if you are one of the lucky ones who did get to meet the love of their lives, don’t render your relationship meaningless because it eventually ended.
We don’t always end up with our soulmates. We shouldn’t always end up with our soulmates.
We’re just lucky if we meet them in the first place.
After all, some people never do.
